AI Self-Portrait Prompts: Explore “The Other Me” with nana

What would a portrait of you look like if you had become a lighthouse keeper? Perhaps there’s a bookshop you’ve always imagined running.

For nana’s NightCafe Daily Challenge takeover, The Other Me: Alternate Self-Portraits, you’re invited to picture yourself in another life. Your portrait could explore a path you never took or express a feeling that’s difficult to put into words.

To create an alternate self-portrait with AI, describe your recognizable features and place yourself in an imagined scene. Then choose an art style that suits your idea. That written description is your prompt.

Below, you’ll find two original prompts from nana, with suggestions from NightCafe to help you make them your own.

What is an alternate self-portrait?

An alternate self-portrait places you in an imagined version of your life. It can also use a setting to express something about who you are.

Keep a connection to your appearance through features you choose to include, such as your curls or favorite glasses. Around that familiar face, you can imagine a different world.

You might see yourself tending a garden beside the sea. A portrait of you opening the door to an unfamiliar landscape could express a change you’re considering. The idea can be personal without sharing anything you would rather keep private.

nana describes what draws her to making art:

I make art to portray all that I feel but cannot say, so my emotions and emotional situations hugely affect my art, or you could say, inspires it.

How to write an AI self-portrait prompt

Start with a short description of yourself. Add a setting you can picture clearly and say what you’re doing there.

For example, “a woman with silver curls arranging flowers in her seaside shop” gives the image generator a subject and a scene. You could add “watercolor painting, soft afternoon light” to describe the finish.

Here’s a starting point from NightCafe:

A portrait of me with [recognizable features], [doing something in an imagined setting], in the style of [art medium], with [lighting or colors].

Replace the bracketed words with your own details. You don’t need to fill the prompt with technical terms.

nana explains her preference:

What I do like doing is adding the modifiers I found helpful along all my prompts. And I always love to keep it all short and simple.

Modifiers are words that describe how the picture should look. “Soft afternoon light” is a modifier. So is “oil painting.”

If your result feels crowded, try removing a detail before adding anything else. A shorter prompt can make it easier to work out what needs changing.

Two original AI self-portrait prompts from nana

The prompts below are reproduced exactly as nana supplied them. You can replace the appearance details with your own when you try them.

The guidance beneath each prompt is from NightCafe.

Imagine a different life: the lighthouse keeper

An image made with nana's prompt below.

nana’s original prompt:

A woman with curly dark hair and freckles as a lighthouse keeper on a remote coast, enjoying the sea breeze, cinematic detailing, mixed media, intricate fine art, dreamy oil painting with delicate gold leaf, midnight blue and muted gold.

To make this portrait your own, replace “curly dark hair and freckles” with the features you want to include.

Keep the lighthouse if that life appeals to you. Otherwise, choose a role you’ve wondered about. You might imagine yourself as a botanical illustrator working beside an open window.

Giving your imagined self something to do helps the picture tell a story. Watching the horizon through binoculars creates a different portrait from sitting outside the lighthouse with a book.

In nana’s prompt, “mixed media” suggests a combination of artistic materials or textures. The gold leaf adds a decorative finish. You can keep those details or try an art medium you already enjoy.

Show a feeling: between familiar and new

An image made with nana's prompt below.

nana’s original prompt:

A woman with curly dark hair and freckles standing between a room filled with childhood memories and a landscape of new beginnings, expressing the bittersweet experience of becoming someone new, poetic surrealism, cinematic details, mixed media, hdr.

This prompt uses the surroundings to express a feeling.

To personalize it, describe one object that belongs in the room. A well-worn reading chair might carry more meaning for you than a room full of unspecified memories.

Then decide what lies beyond it. An open gate leading to a sunlit field gives the image something visible to show. What that field represents is up to you.

Surrealism brings things together in ways that wouldn’t normally happen. Here, a room and an outdoor landscape share one portrait.

You can leave out unfamiliar style terms when adapting the prompt. Keep the details that help you picture the image you want.

Can you use a photo for an AI self-portrait?

Yes, when you choose a NightCafe Template or image workflow that accepts a photo. A clear, well-lit picture gives it a useful reference for your appearance.

Our beginner’s guide to NightCafe portrait Templates explains how to explore portrait styles using a selfie.

You can also begin with a written description. This can suggest your appearance, but it won’t reliably reproduce an exact likeness. For more guidance on keeping a face recognizable across different scenes, read how to create consistent AI characters.

What if the portrait doesn’t feel like you?

Look at the result and decide what you would most like to change.

If the face feels unfamiliar, revisit the appearance details or your reference image. If the setting is the problem, adjust that part of the prompt while keeping the rest steady.

Changing one detail at a time helps you understand what made a difference.

Changing the lighting gives this imagined lighthouse keeper’s portrait a warmer feel. Both images use the same prompt apart from the lighting description.

A portrait can resemble you and still miss the feeling you wanted. Perhaps the pose looks too formal. You could describe yourself leaning against a window frame with a relaxed expression.

Treat the first result as something you can respond to. Your choices about what to keep and what to change are part of making the portrait personal.

As nana says:

But as you start this journey, I'd advise you to take it slow as, even though it all looks so easy to do from a distance, like everything else, this too takes some practice.

Does an alternate self-portrait have to look realistic?

No. For The Other Me, you can explore an artistic interpretation while keeping your chosen features recognizable.

A watercolor portrait might suit a quiet scene you have in mind. If your imagined life takes place somewhere impossible, a detailed fantasy painting could help you show that world.

Choose the style that interests you. You can always try the same idea in another medium and see which version feels closer to what you imagined.
