Step Into the Wonderfully Weird: A NightCafe Artist Spotlight on u/gullyDJ
What does it take to become a NightCafe original?
Some creators you recognize from a single image. u/gullyDJ is one of them. With 160K+ creations, 28K+ followers, and well over a million likes, Gully has built a loyal community around a body of work that is unmistakably his own: layered, intentional, and always with something to say. He is a storyteller first and a generator second.
If you have spent any time on NightCafe, you have almost certainly scrolled past one of his creations or picked up something useful from his insight in the community forums. Gully is full of skill and he never gatekeeps it. He is a community staple, and right now he is wearing two of NightCafe's biggest hats: he is hosting a Daily Challenge Creator Takeover, and he is a community judge on NightCafe Select.

We sat down with him to talk origin stories, prompt-writing rules, and the one habit that helped him grow.
It started with a custard pie
When we asked Gully how it all began, the answer was exactly as offbeat as his art:
"I got started on NightCafe because of a silly picture of a politician getting hit by a custard pie. It was terribly rendered but it made me laugh and I asked my friend who had posted it how he had made it and he pointed me in the direction of AI generative art and the rest is history as they say."
A bad render that made him laugh. That is a very Gully origin story, and proof that you do not need a grand plan to start. You just need one image that makes you curious.
A style that sits between Escher and Looney Tunes
Gully's work is instantly recognizable, but it pulls from a deep and eclectic well. Here is how he describes the influences behind it:
"My image work blends surreal mindscapes and symbolism occasionally with a dash of humor, retro sci-fi, fantasy illustration and fake-documentary realism. It's influenced by liminal spaces, old VHS/camcorder footage, rave culture, absurd animal characters, mythical creatures and strange scale shifts. Visually it sits somewhere between Escher, Magritte, Lynch, Gilliam, Moebius, Giger, Frazetta, Aardman, Looney Tunes and surreal album-cover art."

The creator he thinks you should be following
We always ask our spotlight artists to point us toward someone underrated. Gully did not hesitate:
"I feel one of the most underrated artists on NightCafe is actually one of our moderators from the Facebook group, u/inggriflam. Phenomenal body of work which explores the weird and the wacky and people should be following her as she writes brilliant original prompts and modifiers."

Gully's rules for writing better prompts
This is the part most creators came for. Gully's prompt-writing advice is refreshingly practical:
"My tips on prompt writing in general are to follow a structure. Try to be visually descriptive with concise language. Avoid using modifiers that clash (this is the biggest mistake I see on many prompts) so for example if you're making a photography image don't use painters as your influences. Research the model you are going to use and find out what the creators say works best and adapt your prompt writing style for that model."
The short version: structure your prompt, stay visually descriptive, do not mix modifiers that fight each other, and learn the model you are using before you fight it.

His secret for placing in the Daily Challenge Top 20%
Gully is a regular high-ranker, and his favorite event might surprise you:
"My favorite theme is actually Masterpiece Monday. My tip for the top 20% is to check your composition and angles. Once you have made your artwork do you check to see if its composition is good or bad? Are you showing it in a manner that is new or exciting? How are your angles and composition drawing the person into the image and making them look over it? When I'm satisfied with the answers to this I enter my creation."
The takeaway: do not hit submit on your first generation. Interrogate the composition first. Are the angles pulling the viewer in? Is there a reason to keep looking? That extra pass is the difference between an entry and a Top 20% entry.

The one feature he can't live without
Every spotlight artist gets asked which NightCafe tool they would keep if they could only keep one. Gully's answer:
"Haha all of it lol. But seriously I think the search function on PRO accounts is a godsend. My organization is bad but I can always find any picture I want because NightCafe has an awesome search tool."

His advice for Day-1 creators
We closed with the question we ask everyone: if a brand-new creator could hear one piece of advice, what would it be?
"Don't be scared to make mistakes and don't get angry or despondent when your first lot of prompts don't do what you wanted. Follow creators with open prompts. Find someone who leaves their prompts open and look at how they use their words to create images and pay attention to the models they use too."
