DeepDream alters the data in each layer to create new images–for instance, if the first layer identifies an edge, DeepDream might change the location or thickness of that edge to create a new image. DeepDream can also add new elements, such as if the neural network identifies a dog in an image, it could add more dogs or turn the dog into another animal.
By passing the image through many layers of the neural network, you’ll end up with an image that is "trippy" or "dreamy.”
